Virtus Investment Partners (VRTS) is a boutique asset manager that is virtually unknown by investors. Originally part of Phoenix Companies, a hapless life insurance company, Virtus was spun out in early 2009, precisely the time to ensure that the fewest number of investors were paying attention. Since then, Virtus has become solidly profitable, grown at a tremendous pace, and closed much of the spinoff discount that was originally present.

However, with a management team that continues to surprise in its effectiveness, continued undervaluation, ongoing growth, and the potential to be taken out in M&A with a clearly identified suitor, Virtus continues to be a compelling opportunity. It’s the safest, highest quality company I own, and it’s worth much more than the current stock price – which is why it’s my largest position.
